conflicts between Jews and Arabs for much of the last century.

The women who wear these brass rings on their neck belong to a sub-group of the Karen known as the Padaung. The most common
explanation for wearing those rings is that an extra-long neck is considered as a sign of great beauty and wealth and that it will attract a better husband.
Looking at this beautiful girl, I can't stop thinking that if she continues this tradition it can be only because of the business from hill-tribe trekking
tours.

The Karen come from Burma, they have suffered opression at the hands of successive regimes. Forced re-settlement and labor, incarceration, denial of political
representation and citizenship status rights among other human rights violations have led thousands of Karen to move into Thailand. While many argue that they have a better life there, their status
is yet unsure. Many of them are in Thailand as refugees.

In 1957 Aug. 31, Malaya achieves independence from Britain. The flag is replaced by independent Federation o Malayan flag. The proclamation is held at Stadium Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur.
